Abstract:

This project aimed to enhance public understanding, acceptance, and support for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) through experiential workshops that simulated the learning challenges they face.

Details:

The team first established an Instagram page to introduce different types of SEN and the support services currently available. SEN students and professionals were invited to share their experiences, while interactive polls, quizzes, and Q&A activities were conducted through Instagram Stories to engage followers and raise awareness. The platform also served as a channel for promoting and announcing details of the simulation workshops.

The team then organized a two-day experiential learning programme featuring four interactive game booths, each designed to simulate the learning difficulties faced by students with different types of SEN. The workshop scenarios focused on dyslexia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and hearing impairment. Through hands-on activities, participants were encouraged to “learn by doing” and gain first-hand experience of the challenges encountered by SEN students. Reflection and discussion sessions enabled participants to internalize their learning and develop more positive attitudes toward SEN, which they could apply in future interactions with SEN students.

After completing each booth, participants received on-the-spot explanations about the corresponding SEN condition to address misconceptions, challenge stereotypes, and deepen their understanding and empathy. The team also connected the simulations to participants’ own learning experiences and interactions with SEN students, helping them better appreciate the difficulties these students face. Upon completing all activities, participants were introduced to the broader SEN landscape in Hong Kong, further strengthening their understanding of SEN issues from a wider social perspective.
